Organized in 1875, the Elbert-Douglas County Livestock
Association (EDCLA) is one of the oldest livestock associations, and is a
affiliate of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association.
The Elbert Douglas
County Livestock Association promotes health, education, agricultural
business, land and resource stewardship, and family & community in Elbert
and Douglas Counties.
EDCLA currently has more than 120 members who take an
active role in the issues that affect livestock owners and producers.
Some of the major issues that are addressed include: the future of
agriculture, brand laws, grazing land and water use, noxious weeds and
predators.
The association takes pride in supporting community
activities. Annually, the EDCLA provides four $600 college
scholarships to Elbert or Douglas County students who are attending college
with an agricultural related major. The annual barbeque at the Elbert
County Fair funds the scholarships where Colorado beef is fed to more than
800 fairgoers.
Additionally, EDCLA sponsors the Bred-Heifer project and the
"infamous" Catch-A-Calf contest at the Elbert County Fair. The
Catch-A-Calf contest must be seen to be believed, as the youngsters scramble
to catch the calves.
Each September EDCLA hosts the Annual
Ranch Rodeo a the Elbert County Fairgrounds. This is no regular rodeo
with bucking broncs and bulls, but timed competitions of actual ranch events
that every modern cowboy needs to know: Team Doctoring, Double
Mugging, Trailer Loading, Team Sorting and Calf Branding. Following
the rodeo, EDCLA hosts a steak fry.
